Summary

The Boston Red Sox community outreach program keeps the Sox excitement alive for young fans in anticipation for the next big game. An engaging game memento, Wally’s Playbook is a robust STEM activity book that uses edutainment in the form of fun Red Sox themed activities and creative learning — all encompassed by STEM learning based on real world baseball applications. The Kid Nation Newsletter is an interactive e-newsletter featuring Red Sox news, fun contests, trivia, player profiles, and most importantly, continuous STEM content. New newsletters are sent every few months to Red Sox Kid Nation members, keeping them connected to their team.

Objective

The Red Sox have a proud history and, as one of the oldest clubs in the MLB, they are deeply rooted in the local community. Generations of kids have grown up as fans, each generation requiring fresh and relevant ways of interacting with their favorite team. The purpose of their community outreach program is to offer today’s kids both hands-on and digital engagement that resonates with them. This two-part program brings the Red Sox into the homes of young fans and their families, sustaining connection throughout the year and beyond the walls of the stadium. It helps build loyalty and create new fans.

OPPORTUNITY & STRATEGY

As integrated offerings of the Kid Nation fan club, the STEM focused activity book and e-newsletter allows the Red Sox to demonstrate how much they value their youth market. These edutainment materials strengthen the connection between kids, their families, and the team—and loyalty at a young age often means loyalty for life. Through fun, kid-centric design, language and original STEM activities, kids are drawn into the Red Sox world, it’s an experience created exclusively for them. A variety of content ensures that their community outreach program is fun and engaging for a wide range of ages and interests.
