Case Study:

The Government of Canada’s Community Outreach Program

Summary

Kidzsmart was approach by the Government of Canada / Health Canada to create a series of booklets which would educate children with regard to safety and safe play practices. The various safety messaging would be presented in a fun and engaging way and the points would be communicated through games, activities, and other edutainment content. This program targeted families across Canada, and expanded to also include Canada’s First Nations and Inuit Health Branch.

Services:

Family Program Brand Identity, Art Direction, Character Design, Print Design and Copywriting.

Engagement:

2010 – 2015

Goal:

Educating elementary school-aged children with regard to general safety in a fun and engaging manner. Encouraging general wellness through activity, healthy diet choices and safe hygiene practices.

Objective

Kidzsmart was tasked to make the information within these booklets fun and engaging. All too often, information about health and safety can cause kids to turn off. With our commitment to quality, the booklets were designed to connect kids through a fun mascot and representation as kids need to see themselves in the content they consume. Additionally, the content was design to be informative and to connect parents and educators.

OPPORTUNITY & STRATEGY

We created two booklets to address cognitive levels of our audience – one booklet would target children 7 and under with content crafted specifically for that age range – while a second booklet would be focused on children aged 8 and up. Both projects featured Radar the Safety Dog as chief communicator.

This was done in conjunction with Health Canada and Canada’s First Nations and Inuit Health Branch and featured a series of young First Nation’s youth as the ambassadors of the message.

RESULTS

Encouraged by this positive response, Kidzsmart was then approached to create a similar product which would be designed specifically for Aboriginal youth. This booklet focused on general child wellness through healthy lifestyle and diet.

A similarly themed playmat piece was later commissioned by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research.
